Artist

Shona Lenaghan is an illustrator and artist based in Selkirk, celebrated for her vibrant acrylic landscapes and townscapes that blend Scottish Colourism and Impressionism. She draws inspiration directly from the Scottish Borders and wider Scotland, often working outdoors in her studio at Lindean.

With a background in animation and illustration, her art has featured on programme covers and in exhibitions across the UK. Her work is currently exhibited at oneOC Gallery in Hawick and is available to purchase online at Shop the Borders.

  • Shona trained as an animator, illustrator, and painter. Her artwork has been featured on programme covers for the Edinburgh Fringe and Eastgate Theatre. She has also worked freelance for The Scotsman newspaper and various design agencies across Scotland.

    Over the past 25 years, Shona has shifted her focus from animation and illustration to landscape art. She describes her artistic style as a blend of Scottish Colourism and Impressionism. Her work is characterised by vibrant colours and evocative atmospheres, aiming to capture a nostalgic essence of the landscapes she paints, inviting viewers to imagine walking through fields, brushing against wildflowers, and feeling the rhythm of the countryside.

    Shona loves working outdoors because it allows her to immerse herself in the landscape and respond to it directly.

  • Motivation

    Based in her studio in Lindean, Selkirk, she draws inspiration from her surroundings, both natural and architectural. She often works outdoors, capturing fleeting moments in her sketchbook or painting directly on-site.

    Exhibitions

    Shona has exhibited collectively in venues such as Islington, London, The Compass Gallery in Glasgow, and other Scottish galleries.

    • Early 2022 - her painting Eyemouth Herring Queen was acquired by the RNLI’s Art Collection, joining works by notable artists such as William Wyllie, Tracey Emin, William Broome, and Stanhope Forbes.
    • 2019 - Shona held her first solo exhibition at The Gallery, Melrose, which was later featured in ArtMag Scotland. Her work was also highlighted in The Scottish Field Magazine’s Instagram series, “Meet the Maker.”
    • Shona’s animation work has been showcased at the Shell Film Festival in Birmingham and the Edinburgh Film Festival.
    • More recently, she collaborated with an animation company on a film adaptation of the “Coulter’s Candy” rhyme for Scots Hoose, a government-funded project promoting the Scots language in schools. View it here.
