Raku Pottery

Helen Pugh-Cook is a talented potter from Kelso, working across the Scottish Borders. Inspired by Scotland’s dramatic landscapes, she creates distinctive pottery, including raku-fired pieces in blues and coppers and her signature “wet grass” series. Her work is currently exhibited at the Landscape Borders exhibition at oneOC Gallery in Hawick and is available for purchase online at Shop the Borders.

Work by Helen Pugh-Cook

  • Being surrounded by Asian artifacts brought back by my ancestors or my travels has always greatly influenced my work. The twentieth-century studio potters who took the craft of pottery into a new Art form have inspired my experimental approach.

In my own making, the form comes first, with the colour and decoration being determined by the form. I intend never to speculate what I will create but allow the medium to dictate. I currently experiment in both Raku and electric firings, mainly using crackle glazes as I enjoy their unpredictability and the aged effect they give the items.

  • I am fortunate enough to live in the beautiful Scottish Borders, and the flowing lines of the agricultural tracks curving over the landscape and the tree bark textures are a regular trait in my work.

If anyone feels connected to one of my pieces, it gives me tremendous satisfaction. I wish my work to evoke a memory or sense of enjoyment; each piece should have its own story.
